About the Artist: Laura Lopez Cano

Laura Lopez Cano is a widely acclaimed and recognized artist; her images invoke the tender but powerful manifestations of womanhood, culture and heritage. Cano’s medium is a blending of acrylics with oils on large canvases that has become her signature style. Her focus is on depictions of women, including representations of the Madonna. Laura also focuses on interpretation of Latino/Hispanic Folk Art with images of Day of the Dead, Tree of Life, and Loteria. Her work has been featured in countless galleries, private exhibits, and fine arts shows throughout the United States receiving the honor of Best of Showon several occasions.
Laura holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Texas at El Paso and studied fashion illustration at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. She has taught college-level classes in the United States and in Mexico.
Laura believes in serving her community and is involved in several community based organizations. Laura has served on the board of several non-profit organizations including Multicultural Education & Counseling through the Arts; Casa Marianella, and Hispanic Scholarship Consortium. She graciously gives of her art and time to support numerous charitable organizations, including Las Comadres, MANA, Hispanic Women’s Corporation, Hispanic Women Network of Texas, and other organizations that promote education and women’s issues.
Most recently, Laura was selected by Office of Governor Rick Perry Governmental Appointments Office to serve on a Committee for the Texas Education Agency–newly formed and called Campus Distinction Designation Fine Art Criteria Committee.
Laura was selected as the poster artist for the Center for Disease Control’s National HIV/Aids Partnership Awareness Campaign, which was unveiled at the United Nations on World Aids Day in 2005. In 2006, Laura served on the McDonald’s Corporation’s Mom’s Global Insights Panel.
Laura is a graduate of several Leadership Training programs which include National Hispana Leadership Institute (which included courses at Harvard University JFK School of Government, the Center for Creative Leadership Institute) and Las Comadres-Texas Public Policy and Candidate Training Program.
