Frequently Asked Questions about COUNT ON ME: Tales of Sisterhoods and Fierce Friendships

What kind of book is COUNT ON ME?

COUNT ON ME is a collection of 12 non-fiction stories penned by prominent Latina U.S. writers who demonstrate the power of a comadre in their life. Each writer provides riveting, emotion-filled snapshots of friendships that overcame the most difficult, dark moments and survived because of the humor, humanity and mentorship of their comadre. COUNT ON ME is an unprecedented compilation of Latino literature’s most vibrant voices on the topic of female friendships. The book is the first published work of Las Comadres Para Las Americas, the 12-year old international women’s organization.

What is a Comadre?

Comadre is a powerful term, and concept, with connotations that are unique to the Latino culture. It encompasses many of the most complex and important relationships that exist between women: best friends, confidants, advisors, neighbors, and godmothers to each other’s children. The term is also used to describe midwives and describes a strong bond between one woman who helps another bring a child into the world. Latinas recognize the most common definition of the term comadre as it relates to friendship and camaraderie. A comadre or the idealized notion of comadreship can also manifest itself in various ways throughout a woman’s life. Comadre-type friendships can also blossom with non-Latinos who appreciate a Latina’s openness and warmth in her manner of showing you affection.
