Valentine’s Day is just around the corner – it’s celebrated every year on February 14. Most of us who have grown up in the United States know this holiday as a day for couples…it’s a day of love and romance. But not all love has to be romantic. There is also the love of friendship. In many Latin American countries, such as Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic, it’s also a day of friendship. The day is referred to as “Día del amor y la amistad” – day of love and friendship.
In the romantic version of Valentine’s Day, you go out with your special someone for for a fancy dinner, or you give or receive flowers, chocolates, and jewelry. But among friends, there is an even more special gift you can give or receive – the gift of words and experiences…books. And not just any friends, but those “comadres” who are there for you throughout time, through the best and worst, who understand you better than you understand yourself.
Count On Me: Tales of Sisterhoods and Fierce Friendships (also available in Spanish as Cuenta Conmigo: Conmovedoras historias de hermandad y amistades incondicionales) is the perfect way to celebrate your special friendships with comadres this Día de la Amistad. Do you have your copy yet? If not, be sure to order one for yourself – and for a comadre. Get the hard copy if you’re old school and like to read on paper, or download the digital version to read on your portable electronic device.
Join us on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 for a special 30-minute Twitter-chat all about amistades, friendships, and comadre-ships. How can we celebrate Valentine’s Day – Día de la Amistad – in honor of our comadres?
